Offensive Fireworks Lift Generals to a Win

PETERSBURG, VA

The Generals who haven’t won an opening day game since 2009, ended that drought with a 9-1 win over the Wilson Tobs to start the season off 1-0.

“It’s a great way start to our season,” first year Head Coach Matt Laney stated after the game.

Fresh off a win versus the defending champion Peninsula Pilots, the Tobs came in with a lot of momentum. Still feeling the electricity of last night, Everett Eynon singled to get things started. Alex Dandridge (1-0) hit the next batter advancing the runner, but he was picked off at third on an attempted steal. Dandridge worked his way out of the inning without allowing any runs. The bottom of the first showed a glimpse of some possible good fortune for the Generals as Andre Moore reached on an error and stole second to get in scoring position but was left stranded there to end the inning.

The second inning started off identical to the first as the leadoff batter Cole Bedford singled to start the inning, but he was part of a double play on the next at bat. The following batter popped up to first and the inning was over and the Generals defense still had not allowed a runner to reach third. In the bottom half of the inning, Petersburg’s bats started to come alive as they put together back to back hits, but no runs were produced and two innings were in the books.

The Tobs caught a break in the third inning as a throwing error by the catcher which allowed K.J. Bryant to score putting the Tobs on top. The Generals would answer in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded walk to Dylan Yankle scoring Collin Fleischer to tie the game at 1-1.

After that slight blunder by the Generals’ defense, they locked down and only allowed one more hit in the fifth and went on to score eight unanswered runs. Mixed in the offensive explosion was three stolen bases by Andre Moore, and two RBIs a piece by the 6,7,8 batters. “We had great pitching tonight by Alex, Conner, Austin, and Carter along with great offensive numbers that helped us seal the win,” stated Coach Laney after the win. Dandridge gets the win (1-0), while Alex Eubanks gets the loss (0-1).

The Generals will be on the road the next three nights as they travel to Wilson, NC to face the Tobs tomorrow, to Hampton, VA on Friday to play the Peninsula Pilots and to Wilmington, NC to play the Sharks on Saturday. You can listen to the games live on CPL webpass. The Generals will face the Pilots on Monday June 1, for our next home game which will be “Bring a Kid to the Game Night” sponsored by McEachin and Gee Personal Injury Attorneys.
