2013 MLB Draft

The Coastal Plain League announced Thursday that 78 players, both former and current, were selected during the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Chad Pinder, a former Peninsula Pilot in 2011, highlighted this year’s CPL draft class after hearing his name called in the new competitive balance round that followed round two. He went 71st overall to the Oakland Athletics, two spots before 2011 Forest City Owl Colby Suggs was drafted 73rd overall to the Miami Marlins. A total of 15 CPL players were taken in the first 10 rounds of this year’s draft, giving the CPL over 1,000 alums taken in the draft since its inception in 1997.

All of the CPL’s current 14 clubs had a player taken in the 2013 draft. The Columbia Blowfish led the way with 13 former and current players selected. Forest City was next with ten followed closely by Peninsula who saw eight Pilots get drafted. Four teams: Florence, Asheboro, Fayetteville, and High Point-Thomasville each tallied six picks apiece. Next were Morehead City, Wilmington, Wilson, and former CPL franchise, Outer Banks, who each saw five alums selected, while Martinsville had four. Gastonia followed with three, while Petersburg and Edenton rounded out the field with two a piece.

The complete list of CPL players – both former and players signed for the 2013 season – taken in this year’s draft is below:
