The Generals Go Streaking

Updated July 17 2015
PETERSBURG, VA

The Generals (19-20) defeat the Steamers (29-12) by a final score of 6-4.

The streak continues as Petersburg have won eight games in row the longest streak in the Coastal Plain League this year. They also lead the head-to-head series against Edenton 5-3 and remain in first place of the east division.

The Generals got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as a series of walks by Festa loaded the bases. Aaron Newman was hit by a pitch allowing Austin Wade to score, then back-to-back singles by Jansen Fraser and Randy Loew scored GK Young and Carlos Lopez to give the Generals the 3-0 early lead.  After the Steamers could not produce a hit in the top of the second inning the Generals added two more runs on an error by the shortstop to score Wade and a SAC fly by GK Young scored Joe Schrimpf and Petersburg was up 5-0.

Thomas Durant continued to work through the minimum amount of batters not allowing a hit in three innings of work. The bats for the Steamers finally woke up in the fourth inning as a single by Gruber finally broke the ice. A SAC fly by Chance Shepard put the first run on the board for the Steamers, but an error by the Generals’ shortstop allowed an additional run to score cutting the Petersburg lead to three, 5-2. Edenton would score two more in the sixth inning off a double by Hair to score Rosselli and a wild pitch scored Shepard to cut the Generals’ lead to one, 5-4. Petersburg would answer in the bottom half of the inning as Wade singled to score Fraser expanding the lead 6-4.

Luke Simpson would finish the game for the Generals, after a brief outing by Cater Siweck, going 2 2/3 innings not allowing a hit.

The winning pitcher was Thomas Durant (3-3) and the loss went to Mathew Festa (2-2). Luke Simpson picked up his first save of the season.
The Generals will look to continue their good play tomorrow as they travel down to Hampton to take on the Peninsula Pilots (20-18) in War Memorial Stadium, game time 7:05pm. Petersburg will travel to Edenton on Monday before they play their next home game on Tuesday, July 21st against the Martinsville Mustangs (16-24) at 12 noon.
