Taormina’s RBI In Eighth Gives Gastonia Come-From-Behind Win

GASTONIA, N.C.

Sammy Taormina’s (Liberty) RBI in the eighth inning pushed Gastonia past Asheboro 9-8 Monday night at Sims Legion Park.

Taormina’s (2-for-5, 2 RBI) single up the middle broke an 8-8 tie and gave the Grizzlies (14-9) a come-from-behind victory, their fourth in the last five games and seventh in the last nine.

Blake Edwards (Columbus State) went 2-for-5 with three RBI and Babe Thomas (Winthrop) was 4-for-4 with three RBI.

Alec Bivins (Mars Hill) earned the win (1-1) on the mound with 1.2 innings of relief pitching, allowing no runs and no hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Nathan Helke (King) picked up his first save of the season by working a perfect ninth.

Gastonia is off Tuesday before hosting Forest City at noon on Wednesday.
