Steamers Fall to Sharks in Game One of the East Division Final

EDENTON, N.C.

The Edenton Steamers (0-1) took a tough loss to the Wilmington Sharks (1-0) in game one of the East Division Final falling by a final score of 14-7.

The Steamers opened up the scoring in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run by Chris Ayers. Wilmington responded in the third with back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at two apiece. However, Edenton picked up another two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning off the bat of Billy Wilson to retake the lead 4-2.

The Sharks used another RBI single to cut the Edenton lead to 4-3. Justin Dean made a game saving catch in the bottom half of the inning robbing a homer run by Billy Wilson.

The Sharks’ bats got hot in the seventh inning. After the ninth walk of the game by Steamers’ pitching, Danny Wondrack hit a three-run home run to give Wilmington their first lead of the game, 6-4. The Steamers answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single by Nick Wilson. James Battley also came around to score on the play after a throwing error by the Wilmington right fielder.

After the game was tied up, the Clams turned to Chris Ayers in the eight. Wilmington got three hits to begin the inning on two bunts and a swinging bunt. On the ensuing play, Lucas Martinez dropped a throw from JJ Carr to try and cut down a run at the plate. Trevor McCutchin followed the play at the plate with a grand slam to make it 11-6. Edenton could never recover.

The Sharks added three more runs in the top of the ninth and the Clams added one in the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run for a 14-7 final.

Chris Ayers (0-2) took the loss for the Steamers and Ryan Hedrick (1-0) got the win for Wilmington. The Teal and Black will travel to Wilmington on Saturday for a doubleheader pending weather. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. at the “Shark Tank”.
