PETERSBURG, VA

The Petersburg Generals (23-24) beat the Wilson Tobs (19-28) 11-10 in ten innings tonight at the Petersburg Sports Complex.

Petersburg exploded out the gate as they put up three runs in the bottom of the first. After back to back singles by Austin Wade (TCU) and Joe Schrimpf (Arkansas State University) an error by the shortstop allowed Wade to score. Next Carlos Lopez (Dominican College) doubled to bring home Schrimpf and Mitch Spires (Winthrop) to give the Generals the 3-0 early lead.

Petersburg’s lead was short-lived due to a five run second inning from Wilson. Two errors by the General’s defense accounted for three runs and a single scored two and the Tobs took the 5-3 lead. Showing some tenacity in the third the Generals tied the game at five from a RBI single from Spires to score Schrimpf and Lopez grounded out to allow Spires to score.

The next few innings saw little offense from either side until the sixth inning when Wilson regained the lead. A double by Cooper scored Webster and a single Thacker scored Cooper giving the Tobs the 7-5 lead. Wilson would score twice more in the top of the seventh. Singles by York and Cooper scored two runs to give them the 9-5 lead. Petersburg would answer in the bottom half of the inning scoring one as Schrimpf doubled to score Lane Stancil (St. Leo), but Wilson was still in control 9-6.

After holding the Tobs scoreless for two innings Petersburg was down to their last three outs in the bottom of the ninth. Stancil singled, Wade and Schrimpf were both hit by a pitch to load the bases for Spires. A double by Spires cleared the bases and tied the game at nine and sending it to extra innings for the fifth time this season for the Generals. In the top of the tenth Wilson took the lead off a double by Thacker to score Cooper. Down by one the Generals were one out away as Christopher and Hackett each got out to start the bottom half of the inning. A single by Stancil put the tying run on the base. Wade was hit by a pitch and a walk was issued to Schrimpf to load the bases for Spires. Reminiscent of the ninth inning, Spires singled to score Stancil and Wade to give the Generals the win.

Luke Simpson (1-1) gets the win and Greg Mason (1-3) gets the loss. The win keeps Petersburg in the playoff race for the fourth spot with Wilmington and Holly Springs. Petersburg will look to gain more ground tomorrow as they face Fayetteville at 12:05pm.
