Six-Run Fifth Lifts Tobs To Victory in Hampton

HAMPTON, VA.

The Tobs salvaged a win on the end of a three game road trip, beating the Peninsula Pilots 7-5 for their fifth win at War Memorial Stadium in 2017.

Casey Williams (Liberty) was on the mound for the Tobs, and he turned in his second straight brilliant outing. The right-hander went 7.2 innings, giving up 3 runs (all earned) on five hits, striking out two, walking five, and hitting one man. Williams picked up the win for the Tobs to go to 4-4 on the season.

Jakob Ryan (George Mason) came on with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and got the final out of the frame with a flyout to right field. The southpaw went one inning, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out one, walking one and hitting a man. Ryan was lifted with two outs in the ninth, as the Tobs led 7-5 with left fielder Conor Davis (Auburn) at the plate, representing the winning run.

Tobs closer KJ McAllister (NC A&T) came on to face Davis with runners on first and second. A long battle eventually ended with McAllister on top, as he struck Davis out with a 3-2 fastball, locking down the win for the Tobs. McAllister picked up the save, his seventh of the season.

Offensively, the fifth inning was the difference maker for the Tobs. Josh Ladowski (UNC) led the inning off with a line-drive single into center field. Following a flyout, Hunter Gore (Liberty) was the hitter with Ladowski on base with one out. Gore took a Tyler Garbee (Pittsburgh) fastball over the wall the other way to left center field, his third home run of the season, to give the Tobs a 2-1 lead. After Austin Fisher (Santa Clara) walked, Brady Lloyd (ECU) reached on a Peninsula error to set up first-and-second with one out. After both runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch, Andre Nnebe (Santa Clara) continued the damage. The Tobs center fielder ripped a 2-RBI triple to the right center field wall, scoring Fisher and Lloyd to make it a 5-1 ballgame. Two batters later, Dawnoven Smith (NC A&T) drove in Nnebe with a line-drive double down the left field line to stretch the lead to four. Following Smith, Jake Holtzapple (UNC) drove in the sixth run of the inning, singling in Smith with a single to right field.

In the top of the seventh, the Tobs tacked on another as Austin Fisher grounded a single through the right side of the Peninsula infield, scoring Josh Ladowski to make the score 7.1

Peninsula made it interesting with two in the eighth and two in the ninth, but it was KJ McAllister nailing down the save and the Tobs winning the ballgame, going to 8-16 in the second half with the win and 17-35 on the year.

The Tobs will be back in action on Thursday from Historic Fleming Stadium against the Morehead City Marlins for Thornberry Park Apartments Residents’ Night, NASCAR Night, and Throwback Thirsty Thursday. First pitch is set for 7pm.
