MARTINSVILLE, VA.

Game One

The Holly Springs Salamanders used a hot start to propel themselves past the Martinsville Mustangs 7-1 at Hooker Field. The game was the first half of a doubleheader on Tuesday evening.
Holly Springs starting pitcher Cam Colmore (Sophomore, East Carolina) surrendered one run on six hits over three-plus innings, walking four. Kameron Winburn (Junior, NC Central) pitched three innings out of the bullpen, while Michael Hope (Sophomore, Shippensburg) tossed the final inning.

The Salamanders raced out of the gates, scoring three runs in the first inning. Jacob Jaye (Junior, VMI) hit a two RBI single to open the scoring. Two batters later, Peyton Isaacson (Sophomore, Coastal Carolina) hit an RBI single of his own that pushed the lead to 3-0. The Mustangs pulled a run back in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Zach Michalski (Junior, NC Central). Holly Springs outfielder Mark Colella (Junior, Seton Hill) stretched the lead back out in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer to centerfield. In the seventh inning, Adam Sisk (Junior, James Madison) added a solo home run and Isaacson hit another RBI single to stretch the Salamander lead to 7-1, which would be the final score.

Game Two

The Salamanders were able to keep their momentum rolling from Game One of the doubleheader and defeated the Mustangs 7-2 in Game Two.

The Salamanders pushed the first run across in the second inning off a weird error. The first baseman recorded an out at first and threw to second to try to complete the double play; however, the throw hit the runner in the back and the runner on second came around to score to put the Salamanders up 1-0.

After that, Ben Gross (Junior, Princeton) stole the show. He recorded multiple 1-2-3 innings with multiple strikeouts in each inning. He dominated the game from start to finish. In fact, the only blemish on his record came in the bottom of the fifth. Martinsville’s Keaton Weisz (Redshirt-Sophomore, Coastal Carolina) doubled in a run to make it 3-1. The next inning, off a new Salamanders pitcher, Martinsville made in a 3-2 game. That was as close as they would get.

In the seventh, the Salamanders pushed across four runs to make the final score 7-2. Matt Cronin (Freshman, Arkansas) came in to close the game out and made it interesting. He loaded the bases with two outs before a foul tip ended the game.

The Salamanders return to action Wednesday night as they host the Peninsula Pilots at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
