WILMINGTON, N.C.

The Holly Springs Salamanders closed out their 2017 campaign on a high note Monday evening, defeating the Wilmington Sharks by a score of 5-2.

The Salamander pitching staff carried much of the load in the season finale, with excellent outings from all four pitchers featured. Starter Jake Isbell (Freshman, Pitt CC) went four innings, striking out four and only giving up one run. Michael Hope (Sophomore, Shippensburg) followed Isbell, and struck out five Sharks in three innings of work, also limiting the damage to one run. Phillip Sanderson (Freshman, Louisville) and Rabon Martin (Junior, Louisville) closed out the game, each of them twirling a scoreless inning. Sanderson picked off a runner at first base during his time on the mound.

In the top of the second, Zach Tondi (Junior, James Madison) singled and drove in Peyton Isaacson (Sophomore, Coastal Carolina) from second. Jacob Jaye (Junior, VMI) added an RBI single of his own that same frame. The Salamanders added two more runs in the top of the sixth through Tripp Shelton’s (Junior, UNCG) sacrifice fly and Patrick Wheeler’s (Freshman, Pitt CC) groundout. In the eighth, Isaacson’s third walk of the night led to the team’s fifth run as the Chanticleer later scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Salamanders ended the 2017 season with a record of 26 wins and 30 losses, going 14-14 at home and 12-16 on the road.
