Owls Crushed in Asheboro

ASHEBORO, N.C.

The Owls played nine games in six days last week, so Wednesday’s off day was much needed for the team.

On Thursday, Forest City (28-17, 9-9) looked to use that rest to their advantage as they traveled to Asheboro to take on the Copperheads (17-30, 6-13).

The contest started in their favor before spiraling out of control in the middle innings, as the Owls fell 13-2.

Both teams put zeros on the board in the first two frames, before Forest City broke the deadlock in the 3rd.

An RBI single by Carson Jones (Lander) that drove in Tyler Miller (Anderson) put the Owls on top.

In the 4th, the Copperheads tied the game on an RBI single by Caleb Webster (UNC Greensboro).

In the 5th, Asheboro took a commanding lead, striking for five runs during the frame. The inning was highlighted by a three-RBI double by Webster, who went 4-4 on the night with six RBI’s and two runs scored.

The Copperheads added four more in the 6th, led by Webster once again, who drove in two more runs on a two-RBI single.

As Asheboro continued to pile on the runs, the Owls bats stalled out. Forest City never got a good threat once the Copperheads pushed the game out of reach.

That is, before the 9th inning, when the Owls finally scored for the second time of the game.

Trailing 13-1, AJ Wright (UMBC) grounded out to first base to bring in Hunter Parker (East Tennessee State), making it 13-2.

The final two batters struck out to end the game, handing the Owls their second consecutive loss.

“Tonight was not a good night offensively,” Owls head coach Matt Reed said. “We had a hiccup one inning defensively and just let them roll into the next few innings.”

Fortunately for Forest City, the Owls remain two games up in the overall west division standings with ten games to go, as both High Point-Thomasville and Gastonia lost as well on Thursday night.

The Owls return to action Friday as they host the HiToms at McNair Field at 7:05 p.m. You can listen to all of the action live on the Forest City Owls Radio Network.
