Marlins use hot bats and stellar pitching in DH sweep over Edenton

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.

The Morehead City Marlins tallied 15 runs on 15 hits in the game one victory followed by a complete shut-out from right-handed pitcher Zach Usselman (NC State) in game two, leading the host Marlins to a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Edenton Steamers from Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium Friday evening. The Marlin claimed the 15-9 triumph in the first contest followed by a 3-0 win in game two.

Morehead City improves to 18-21 overall and 5-6 in the second half of the season. Edenton is now 23-18 overall and 6-7 in the second half of the 2017 campaign. The Marlins return to action tomorrow evening at Big Rock Stadium, hosting the Wilson Tobs for a 7:05 p.m. start before an off-day on Sunday. Game One Recap

The game began in the top of the fifth inning with Morehead City as the visiting team, finishing the suspended contest from July 2 at Historic Hicks Field in Edenton. The Steamers offense exploded out of the gates with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab the 7-3 advantage, highlighed by a three-run homer from Jamie Galazin (St. Johns).

The Marlins stormed back quickly with five runs of their own in the top half of the sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead. A two-run shot from Jackson Ware (Mercer) commenced the MHC offensive fireworks to trim the deficit down to 7-5 before a RBI single from Will Matthiessen (Stanford) and two-RBI ground out by Alec Wilson (Stanford) put the hosts in front by one run.

Edenton immediately responded in the bottom frame with a two-run blast from Billy Wilson (San Jose State) to give the Steamers a 9-8 advantage. Morehead City’s bats came alive once again with a seven-run eighth inning to secure the 15-9 lead. The offensive push began with the game-winning two-run double from Mike Warren (Armstrong State) to put the Marlins ahead 10-9.

A three-run shot from Daulton Weeks (USC Aiken) and RBI single from Kyle Skeels (Coastal Carolina) stretched the MHC advantage out to 14-9 before Ware came around to score on a wild pitch to secure the Marlin’s six-run victory.

Morehead City right-handed reliever Anthony Holubecki (Notre Dame) got the win, improving to 1-1. Edenton starting righty Josh Steele (Hope International) took the loss, falling to 1-1. Holubecki tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with no hits allowed.

Game Two Recap

The Marlins struck first in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of runs on a RBI ground out from Ware and run-scoring single from Sammy Miller (Longwood) to take an early 2-0 lead. Morehead City added an insurance run with a solo bomb from Weeks in the bottom of the fifth inning to stretch the MHC advantage out to 3-0.

Usselman (1-1) tossed seven shut-out innings, allowing only three hits with 10 strikeouts for his first win of the 2017 campaign. Edenton starting pitcher Kelvan Pilot (Arizona Christian) took the loss, falling to 3-2.
