Marlins use big offensive night to top Tobs

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.

The Tobs were looking to win back-to-back games and follow Friday’s home win against Peninsula with a win on the road, but the Morehead City Marlins had other ideas.

Morehead City won Saturday’s game 17-10 at Big Rock Stadium to go to 6-6 in the CPL second half. With the loss, the Tobs dropped to 4-9 in the second half and 13-28 overall on the season.

The Tobs pitching staff had a rough night at the office, as the Marlins scored 17 runs on 18 hits. Morehead City put up runs in five of the eight innings they came to the plate, putting up two in the second inning, three in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the sixth, and seven in the seventh, an inning which the Marlins sent 13 batters to the plate.

The Tobs showed great fight late in the game, scoring seven runs in the final two innings to cut the deficit to 17-10. Overall, the Tobs knocked 15 hits in the game and got multi-hit performances from six different players.

Chad Frazier (Concord) knocked two hits in six at-bats out of the leadoff spot, scoring one run.

CJ Ballard (Georgia Southern) had two hits in five at-bats, including a bases-clearing triple that scored three runs in the eighth, scoring a run as well.

Dawnoven Smith (NC A&T) had a single and a double in four at-bats, driving in a run and scoring twice.

Jake Holtzapple (UNC) had a single and a double in five at-bats, driving in two and scoring one run.

Nick Kitzmann (UC-San Diego) had two hits in four at-bats, driving in one and scoring a run.

Finally, Roberto Rivera (UNC-Pembroke) had a single and a double in three at-bats, scoring two runs.

On the mound, Brett Morrison (Lock Haven) got the start for the Tobs. The right-hander went 4.1 innings, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out one. Morrison took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season.

Henry Cartrett (USC Aiken), Cole Hinnant (Francis Marion), Tristan Roberts (Presbyterian), Will Edwards (Chowan) and AJ Hunt (NC A&T) would finish the game out of the bullpen for the Tobs. Hinnant threw a scoreless sixth, and Hunt threw a scoreless eighth, recording one stirkeout.

The Tobs are back in action Sunday at Historic Fleming Stadium for Scout and Troop Night as well as Bang For Your Buck Sunday against the Edenton Steamers. Gates open at 4pm, and first pitch is set for 5pm.
