The Edenton Steamers clubbed four home runs en route to a 6-3 victory over the Peninsula Pilots on Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium.
In a crucial matchup for positioning as the first half closes Saturday, the Pilots (15-11) jumped out early but the Steamers (16-11), who lead the CPL in home runs, hit four to hand the Pilots the loss. Fayetteville, who won on Thursday night, jumped into first place while the Pilots dropped to third and is a half-game back from first place.
In their first at-bats, the Pilots strung together four consecutive hits to get on the scoreboard. Jonathan Embry (Liberty) singled to right field to start the inning. Nathan Eaton (VMI) followed by beating out a bunt to put two on. After a successful double steal, Matt Schneider (Mercyhurst) continued his hot streak with a two-run single up the middle. Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by Conor Davis (Auburn) plated Schneider to push the lead to 3-0.
Anthony Maselli (Boston College) put the Steamers on the board with a solo shot in the third inning. Connor Kopach (Southern Indiana) cut the Pilots’ lead to one with a solo shot in the visiting bullpen in the fifth inning.
Billy Wilson (Loyola Marymount) hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to put the Steamers on top for a 4-3 lead.
The Steamers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to push their lead to three.
Nick Wegmann (Binghamton) picked up the win as he improved to 4-1 on the season. The southpaw gave up three runs in six innings and struck out five. Carmen Giampetruzzi (Boston College) picked up his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Vinnie Tarantola (Liberty) took the loss to even his record at 2-2. Collin Liberatore (Pittsburgh) had a solid outing as he exited the game with the lead but the bullpen could not hold the lead. The right-hander gave up two runs in five innings of work.
The Pilots finish out the first half of the summer with a road game at Holly Springs on Friday night before returning home on Saturday to face Wilson in the Dogs Days of Summer!
