Morehead City Marlins shortstop Chandler Corley (Armstrong State) and designated hitter Randy Perez (Central Methodist) each drilled their second home runs of the season, leading the host Marlins to a 7-3 victory over the Wilson Tobs in a weather-shortened game from Puck O’Neal at Big Rock Stadium Saturday evening. The game entered a lightning delay after the conclusion of the sixth inning until the contest was officially called due to more inclement weather in the area.
Morehead City improves to 16-19 overall and 3-4 in the second half of the season. Wilson falls to 11-25 overall and 2-6 in the second half of the 2017 campaign. The Marlins have consecutive off-days tomorrow and Monday before traveling to Historic Hicks Field to face the Edenton Steamers for a 7:05 p.m. start. The game will commence in the top of the fifth inning with the Marlins leading 3-2 to finish the suspended contest from July 2.
Corley led the Marlins offensive efforts, finishing 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Center fielder Alec Wilson (Stanford) continued to produce with his hot bat, finishing 2-for-3 with a RBI and one run scored. Perez was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of runs driven in.
Marlins grabbed the early 1-0 advantage in the bottom half of the first inning on a solo shot from Corley. Two frames later, a RBI single from Corley and sacrifice fly from MHC first baseman Nick Podkul (Notre Dame) extended the Marlins lead out to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
The Tobs tallied their first run in the top of the fourth on a RBI ground out from Zack Smith (UNC Charlotte) to cut the deficit down to 3-1. In the next frame, a RBI double from Daulton Weeks (USC Aiken) and RBI single from Wilson stretched the MHC lead out to 5-1.
Wilson trimmed the margin down to a 5-3 contest on a two-run shot from Shane Shepard (NC State) in the top of the fifth inning before Perez quickly answered with a two-run dinger of his own in the bottom frame to push the Marlins lead out to 7-3. Perez now has a pair of home runs in just his first five games for the Marlins. The contest was eventually called after the bottom of the sixth inning, securing the four-run victory for the Fish.
Marlins right-handed reliever Will Matthiessen (Stanford) got the win, improving to 1-1. Tobs starting pitcher Brett Morrison (Lock Haven) took the loss, falling to 0-1. Morehead City righty Nolan Clenney (NC State) posted a strong start on the mound, tossing four innings with one earned run allowed on three hits and four strikeouts.
