Grizzlies Break Deadlock With Clutch Ninth Inning

THOMASVILLE, N.C.

Gastonia crossed the plate three times in the ninth inning to break a tie ballgame and win 5-3 over the Hi-Toms Saturday night at Finch Field.

Babe Thomas (Winthrop) knocked in one run in the ninth and Casey Scoggins (Tampa) drove home two more as the Grizzlies (4-1, 21-12) pulled away from High Point-Thomasville.

Sammy Taormina (Liberty) added two hits and an RBI for the offense.

Nathan Helke (King) picked up the victory on the mound in relief of starter Brandon Casas (Charlotte) and improved to 3-0 on the season.

Chandler Young (Mars Hill) earned his first save. 

The Grizzlies host Asheboro Monday and Lexington County Tuesday and Sims Legion Park.

Winners of the CPL West Division first-half championship, Gastonia clinched a postseason berth on July 29. The Petitt Cup playoffs begin Aug. 5 featuring the top eight teams in the league in best-of-three, first-round series.
