On a rain soaked day in Petersburg, the Generals (24-24) defeated the Fayetteville Swampdogs (17-32) 4-3 in a seven inning contest.
As the game begin under sunny skies, the Generals quickly shut down the Swampdogs in the top of the first. Still feeling the energy from last night Petersburg came up to bat and quickly scored as Joe Schrimpf (Arkansas State University) reached on an error allowing Austin Wade to score and just like that it was 1-0 Generals. Petersburg would put up two more as G.K. Young (Coastal Carolina University) would double to score Schrimpf and Carlos Lopez (Dominican College) would follow with his own double to score Young.
Sitting firmly in the driver’s seat the Generals held the Swampdogs scoreless through five innings while adding an additional run (which would prove to be a big later) on an error by the Swampdogs’ catcher on an attempted pick off to third allowing Jansen Fraser (University of Richmond) to score and it was 4-0 Petersburg after four.
As the rain started to pick up in the sixth so did the confidence of Fayetteville. A single by Boggetto, a double by Madden ended the shut out. Waln would single to score Madden and the Swampdogs were down two, 4-2. Petersburg failed to gather any insurance runs in the bottom half of six and Fayetteville began to see the silver lining.
The rain began to intensify as we started the seventh inning. A single by Roman then a throwing error on an attempted steal put him in scoring position on third. A shallow pop fly to first would hold him in check, but a single by Boggetto would score Roman, closing the gap 4-3. As Petersburg Generals’ fans heart started to race with nervousness, Cameron Busby (Georgia College and State University, team leading 1.86 ERA) stepped in to get the final out of the inning and maintain the 4-3 Generals lead. Petersburg with runners in scoring position failed to produce any runs in the bottom frame.
A down pour came at the top of the eighth making conditions unplayable and the umpires were forced to call the game after seven innings making it a complete game.
Robert Cook (St. Leo University) gets the win (1-1) and Josh Covey (Florence-Darlington Tech) gets the loss (0-3). The Generals win the season series with the Swampdogs 2-1 and moving them into fourth place in the East Division as they continue the playoff race. Petersburg will look to solidify their playoff position even more as they go on the road to play back to back double headers against the third place Wilmington Sharks tomorrow and the Morehead City Marlins on Thursday. They will return home Friday to face their in state rival, the second place, Peninsula Pilots.
