The Petersburg Generals (13-22) took down the Wilmington Sharks (23-16) Sunday night by a score of 6-5.
In a game delayed an hour due to transportation issues by Wilmington, Petersburg’s Kane Keith (1-0) picked up the win in his first start of the season while the Shark’s Hank Nichols (1-3) earned the loss. Having to get straight off the bus and go, Wilmington gave up three runs to the Generals in the bottom of the first. Outfielder Babe Thomas continued his hot hitting, driving in the first two Generals runs on a single. Chandler Corley followed with a single to score the third run of the inning.
The Sharks battled back in the top of the third, scoring three runs to tie the game at three all. In the bottom frame of the same inning Corley singled to score Sammy Miller and the Generals regained the lead 4-3. The very next inning Petersburg added another run after Caleb Hicks doubled and was brought home by a Ryan Cox sacrifice hit to expand the lead 5-3.
The Generals got an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh off a fielder’s choice to score Thomas and extend the lead to three once again. Sharks All-Star Alec Bohm responded with a two RBI single in the top of the eighth to cut the Petersburg lead to 6-5.
Generals closer Brady Womacks came on to shut down the Sharks in the ninth, picking up his fourth save of the season.
The Generals had an aggressive day on the bases, stealing eight bags as a team. Sharks leadoff man Mark Donadio had a big day, going 3-4 at the plate including an RBI single.
The Generals will be back in action tomorrow at Edenton for a suspended game doubleheader. They return home for a Tuesday afternoon contest against the Asheboro Copperheads. Gates open at 11am, with first pitch scheduled for 12pm.
