PETERSBURG, VA

Opening night ended with fireworks, but the Generals gameplay showed spark during the sixth inning, but it was not enough as the final score tonight was 13-8 in favor of the Martinsville Mustangs.

The Mustangs took control of the game in the top of the second and third innings. The losing pitcher, Forrest Arnold (0-1), shut down the first three Mustangs batters but then Martinsville found the magic touch and went on to score thirteen runs over the next three innings. Martinsville’s Sam Pruitt was credited with the win after a strong five frames in which he surrendered two earned runs on four hits.

Generals Designated Hitter Adam Bauer had an exciting triple to dead centerfield in the bottom of the fourth to jumpstart the Petersburg offense. In the sixth inning outfielder Calvin Scott had a two RBI double to cut the Mustangs lead to eight, 13-5. Leftfielder Hunter Lipscomb picked up a single and a RBI in the inning to add to the offense production closing the deficit to 5 after a fielder’s choice scored a run, 13-8 Martinsville after six innings.

The Mustangs’ offense was led by first baseman Collin Fleischer who had two hits, and shortstop Ivan Acuna had with a three hit night, including two doubles.

The Generals will travel to face the Wilson Tobs tomorrow. They will return home Friday night to host the defending CPL Champions, the Edenton Steamers on Johnny Rowe, Sr. Little League Appreciation Night sponsored by Strosnider Chevrolet.
