Gastonia Wins West Division, Heads To CPL Finals

GASTONIA, N.C.

The Grizzlies defeated Lexington County 5-2 Tuesday night at Sims Legion Park to win the West Division championship 2-1 to one in the best-of-three series. 

Gastonia will face either Edenton or Wilmington in the Pettit Cup championship beginning Thursday. The East Division finalists are scheduled to play the deciding game in that series Wednesday afternoon. 

Brandon Casas (Charlotte) pitched six scoreless innings for the victory, allowing only three hits with seven strikeouts.

Austin Smith (Georgia Gwinnett) earned a save.

Alex Reynolds (Charlotte) went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Casey Scoggins (Tampa) was 1-for-4 with an RBI. 

Winners of the CPL West Division first-half championship, Gastonia clinched a postseason berth on July 29. The Petitt Cup playoffs begin Aug. 5 featuring the top eight teams in the league in best-of-three, first-round series with the higher seeds holding home-field advantage.
