Gastonia Wins Last Game Before All-Star Break

GASTONIA, N.C.

The Grizzlies held off Forest City 6-5 Saturday night at Sims Legion Park.

It was the last contest before the Coastal Plain League All-Star game Monday in Florence, S.C.

Blake Edwards (Columbus State), Sammy Taormina (Liberty), Michael McClellan (Columbus State), Ryan Whitt (King), Taylor Allum (Kennesaw State) and Logan Cook (UNC Pembroke) all were named to the West team which will take on the East team at Sparrow Stadium at 7:15 p.m.

In addition to the All-Star game, the Florence RedWolves and CPL will host a fan fest with live entertainment and home run derby on Sunday.

Allum and Alex Reynolds (Charlotte) both went 1-for-4 with an RBI against the Owls. Casey Scoggins (Tampa) was 1-for-5 with an RBI. 

Jordan Newsome (Wingate) earned the victory (4-0) on the mound after pitching seven innings, giving up four runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Nathan Helke (King) picked his second save.

Gastonia (8-4, 25-15) is back in action Tuesday against Martinsville at 7:17 p.m. at Sims Legion Park. 

Winners of the CPL West Division first-half championship, Gastonia clinched a postseason berth on July 29. The Petitt Cup playoffs begin Aug. 5 featuring the top eight teams in the league in best-of-three, first-round series with the higher seeds holding home-field advantage.
