Gastonia Holds Off Blowfish To Force Game 3

GASTONIA, N.C.

The Grizzlies fought off Lexington County 3-1 Monday night at Sims Legion Park to force Game 3 of their best-of-three CPL West Division championship series.

The deciding game in the series is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:17 p.m. at Sims Legion Park.

The winner will meet either Edenton or Wilmington in the Petitt Cup Finals starting Thursday. The East Division teams are also playing a deciding game Tuesday night.

Gastonia scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings and got an outstanding pitching performance from Zach Sightler (Winthrop), who tossed seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Ethan Wortkoetter (Presbyterian) threw two scoreless innings for the save.

Casey Scoggins (Tampa), Brooks Kennedy (North Carolina) and Jeremy Howell (Kennesaw State) all collected RBI’s in the victory.   

Winners of the CPL West Division first-half championship, Gastonia clinched a postseason berth on July 29. The Petitt Cup playoffs began Aug. 5 featuring the top eight teams in the league in best-of-three, first-round series with the higher seeds holding home-field advantage.
