MIAMI, FLA.

Former Morehead City Marlin and Stanford University right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill (‘14) has been selected to play in the Major League Baseball All-Star Futures Game this Sunday, July 9 from Marlins Park in Miami. The annual exhibition game features the top Minor League baseball prospects from the United States and a team of prospects from other countries in the World competing against each other in a nine inning contest. Quantrill will represent his home nation of Canada and play for the World team. He is the first Marlins in franchise history to be selected to the Futures Game.

Quantrill was selected as the eighth overall pick by the San Diego Padres in the 2016 MLB Draft last summer after a strong collegiate career with the Stanford Cardinal. In the 2014 summer with the Marlins, Quantrill posted a 3-0 record with a 1.59 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings pitched. He was named the starting pitcher for the East in the 2014 CPL All-Star Game from Morehead City, along with earning the start for the CPL Select Team.

Quantrill currently pitches for the Lake Elsinore Storm (Class A Affiliate) of the California League, tallying a 6-5 record with a 3.67 ERA in 14 total starts and 73 2/3 innings with 76 strikeouts. Quantrill was just the seventh former CPL player all-time to be selected in the first round.

The Morehead City stand-out has thrown for a total of 110 2/3 innings in his early Minor League career with 122 total strikeouts and has held opposing batters to a .270 average in 26 career starts. The Futures Game will take place Sunday afternoon, July 9 at 4 p.m. with the game being streamed live on MLB Network and MLB.com.
