HAMPTON, VA.

Six errors doomed the Peninsula Pilots as they fell 6-3 to the Morehead City Marlins on Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium.

Morehead City (3-6) jumped out to a huge lead after scoring a trio of runs in both the first and second innings.

After a leadoff single by Joe Mason (Wingate), two errors followed to give the Marlins an early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, a RBI double by Daulton Weeks (USC-Aiken) plated another run for a 3-0 lead.

Morehead City tacked on three more in the second inning to push the lead to 6-0. Steven Taylor (Mercer) knocked a one-out double before Mason knocked a two-run shot over the left-field wall for a five-run lead. Another Pilots error allowed the sixth run to score.

Peninsula (8-2) slowly chipped at Morehead City’s lead beginning with Matt Schneider’s (Mercyhurst) solo shot over the left-field wall in the second inning.

After trading zeroes for the next three innings, the Pilots cut the deficit to three with two runs in the sixth inning. Kieton Rivers (Coastal Carolina) led off the inning with an infield single. After Nate Eaton (VMI) walked, Scott Dubrule (Jacksonville) almost beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt to move the runners into scoring position. An error on the Marlins’ first baseman allowed Rivers to score. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Drew Delsignore (Merychurst) brought in a run with a RBI single to left field. The Pilots had another potential run thrown out at the plate to squash the rally.

Peninsula had a few more chances to push runs across but was kept off the board by Octavio Mirabal (King), who recorded his second save of the season with 3 1/3 scoreless innings and seven strikeouts. Anthony Veneziano (Coastal Carolina) was awarded with the win giving up a run in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Nick Spadafino (Delaware) took the loss for the Pilots after giving up six runs (two earned) in four innings of work. Taylor Varnell (Oral Roberts) and Ryan Fox (VCU) combined to toss five scoreless innings and only allowed one hit.
