PETERSBURG, VA

The Generals (16-20) defeated the Peninsula Pilots (19-16) 6-5 in eleven innings tonight at the Petersburg Sports Complex.

The Generals face the Pilots a total of twelve times this season and the first half of the season Peninsula owned Petersburg beating them all six times they faced each other, but with a second half brings new life. The Generals go into the All-Star break with a five game winning streak defeating the Pilots twice in the streak to take a 2-0 advantage this half of the season.

The Pilots jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Connor Alford struggled early to find the right combination of pitches to get out of the inning. Not to worry as the Generals put up two runs themselves in the first to tie the ballgame as Schrimpf and Spires each doubled and scored. With Alford finding his control in the second inning, the bats for the Generals continued to ring as they scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead; Stancil had a RBI single and Schrimpf had a two RBI single. Alford caught a snag in the fourth inning as the Pilots put up one and trimmed the Generals’ lead to 5-3, but Alford would finish strong in the fifth, his last inning of work.

A pitching change proved to be detrimental to the Generals as Sean Collins went 1/3 of the sixth inning allowing two runs to score to tie the ball game at 5-5. Carter Siweck came on in relief and took the Generals into the top of the eleventh inning without allowing a run. The Generals did however have a chance to end the game in the bottom of the ninth, but Stancil over ran third and was thrown out to end the inning.

Extra innings were a see saw battle that saw both teams with chances to win the contest. Cameron Busby came in for the Generals at pitcher in the top of the eleventh. He faced three batters and assisted on two of the outs. With the bottom half of the lineup coming to bat for the Generals the pressure was on. Fleisher popped up, Loew singled and Stancil grounded out to move Loew into scoring position. With a climatic end insight Kyle Vaas stepped up to the plate. With a 1-1 count Vaas singled to centerfield to score Loew from second and get the ice water bath at the end.

Cameron Busby gets the win (2-0) and Devin Hemmerich gets the loss (0-1). The Generals will break for three days as All-Star festivities take place in Florence, SC and will return to action on Wednesday July 15th as they travel to Martinsville to take on the Mustangs. The next home game will be Friday, July 17th against Edenton.
