Gastonia Sweeps Martinsville’s Midnight Madness Doubleheader

MARTINSVILLE, VA.

The Grizzlies took a pair of games from Martinsville at the Mustangs’ annual Midnight Madness doubleheader Friday night at Hooker Field.

Gastonia (7-4, 24-15) won Game One 6-5 and Game Two 12-5.

In the opening game, the Grizzlies scored five runs in the third inning and got the go-ahead run in the seventh to hold off the Mustangs.

Game Two saw Gastonia combine for ten runs in the fifth and sixth innings to blow open an otherwise close contest.

Brennan Morgan (Kennesaw State) went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Game One and Casey Scoggins (Tampa) was 3-for-4.

Brooks Kennedy (North Carolina) was 3-for-3 in Game Two and Sammy Taormina (Liberty) and Blake Edwards both went 2-for-4.

Brandon Casas (Charlotte) picked up the decision (2-1) in Game One and Alec Bivins (Mars Hill) earned the victory (2-1) in Game Two.     

The Grizzlies host Forest City Saturday night at Sims Legion Park beginning at 7:17 p.m.

Winners of the CPL West Division first-half championship, Gastonia clinched a postseason berth on July 29. The Petitt Cup playoffs begin Aug. 5 featuring the top eight teams in the league in best-of-three, first-round series with the higher seeds holding home-field advantage.
