Pitcher of the Week (Week 10):
Chris Orphanos (Mount Olive) Forest City:
On the mound, newcomer Orphanos came just one strikeout shy of the league record for strikeouts in a game. The junior from Mount Olive threw a total of 12 1/3 innings without giving up a single earned run and striking out a staggering 21 batters. On July 30, the right-hander dominated Florence, striking out 15 batters on the night in a nine-inning shutout victory for the Owls. A few days later, he was called on in relief against Asheboro and tossed 3 1/3 more innings giving up only three hits and no earned runs while striking out six more batters. Orphanos joined the Owls late in the season but he certainly showed off his stuff in the short time he was here, going 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA striking out 35 in only 26.2 inning of work.
